Well, when it came time for phone upgrades, I chose the Centro while my wife chose the HTC Touch (running WM6). Although I like my Centro (coming from a TX), I am kinda envious of my wife’s Touch. It is fun and easy to use, stable, and looks slick and modern. Quite frankly, I am sick of looking at Garnet, even with all the "window dressing" (ZLauncher, SkinUI, Fontsmoother).

If I had it to do over again I would probably go with WM. I feel like a traitor saying that because I’ve used PalmOS products since my first Visor Deluxe, but it is Palm that has let me down, not the other way around.

BTW, in the past you are right–this thread would cause a flame war. Today, however, I don’t really see that many people fighting for PalmOS anymore, so I’m guessing there will barely be a smoulder, let alone a flame.

    > Is Windows Mobile now good enough to warrant me making the jump?
IMHO Windows Mobile has always been good enough.

    General commentary: (all IMHO)
Overall the PalmOS and WinCE/PocketPC/WindowsMobile are very similar on the surface and under the covers. There are significant differences in technology and versions, but that’s an esoteric discussion unless you are a developer. Unless you need a very specific quirky program, for most common programs and services there are mostly equivalent Palm and WindowsMobile versions. If you have a very specific hardware need (eg: reading 16GB SD cards), that may limit your selection. There are significant differences in how you use the UI elements, but most people can adapt very quickly.

    So to answer the question:
    Q: Which is better?
    A: the one *you* use!

Bottom line: it comes down to the devices, and what you like. Go to a local store that has a selection of PDA/Phone devices. PDA choices are few these days, but there are plenty of smart phones. Play with them. Pick the one you like best and has the applets you need.
As a side effect, if you get more experience with alternatives, you will be more flexible in the future. As you can see in the case of the PalmOS, being blindly loyal to one platform isn’t a winning strategy ;->

I would rather switch to Symbian when Garnet dies. I’ve had a Nokia N72 for almost 6 months before I finally got my Centro, which I immediately switched for my current Treo 680.

Last year I went for a HTC Touch with WM6 and this is what I found:

At first, I was gladly impressed with the phone size and tech specs. The interface (unique to HTC devices) was awesome and so was the packaging. After that, things went downhill: The first annoying thing was the speed. Compared to my T3 were everything happened instantly, the Touch took a few seconds to launch, start or process some commands. Then, I really had a hard time with WM’s quirky interface, which IMHO is not as intuitive or as easy to use as that of the Palm.

As for having the same applications available in both OS’s, I totally disagree. Don’t know now but at the time apps like Agendus, SplashID, RescoViewer and others, were very limited or even a version or two down compared to those on the POS world. This, in fact, was one of the reasons I finally decided to get rid of said phone, since I just could not adapt to the extremely confusing and complicated Agendus-like apps on the WM world.
Other huge dissapointment was the MS Pocket Office included with the phone. Docs-To-Go is light-years ahead in terms of features and functionality (there’s DTG for WM now, thou).
Pocket Internet Explorer is also a bad joke of a browser. It can?t display many sites; others just get displayed but in a completely disarranged manner. Flash, even thou, its supposed to be supported, just can’t display many movies that I had no trouble with in my old UX50 due to ‘memory full errors’. Flash-based sites are off-limits too.

I’m not saying there’s no such thing as good apps there. I found a kind of photoshop-like app that was truly amazing and certainly nothing like that exists for Palm. Game selection is vastly better there too. Bluetooth functionality is also much more developed and so far, POS Treos lack one crucial detail: Wifi.

Stability-wise, my little phone was somewhat stable but it started to develop an strange issue with the messaging app that forced-me to do a hard-reset twice while I was on the road. Even with a backup on the microSD, I couldn’t quite recover from the data-loss.

As someone said earlier, the best phone depends on what your priorities are. I’m using an iPhone now and the reason is: it’s got the best mobile browser of any pda or smartphone device out there and for me that’s the dealbreaker. Am I satissfied with it? nope! it’s unstable, got many missing features and the apps are no match for those I had on my Palm.

Thank you for all your responses, having seen the (rip-off) price of the new treo pro in the UK I think I’m going to hold off buying it and hang on to my dumb phone plus lifedrive combo. Hopefully Nova is going to be amazing and be available on some excellent hardware (that is priced fairly in the UK). It will also make more sense to get a new phone then after I graduate.

Just out of interest though, how is style tap on windows mobile?

    Hi,

Gammada, obviously WM is not for you but your comments are ill informed also.

First, WM is A lot like Windows on A PC, you need to reset or restart it once in A while to release memory.

    Fact of life.

Agendus on WM is A new development that was needed for the developer to make money due to the decline of the Palm market.

How many years did it take the Palm version to get where it is at? give it some time.

There are great programs if you were looking for A replacement though.

Splash ID, same functions on WM or Palm, I have used both and they are the same on both formats.

Resco Viewer, light years ahead as far as functions on the WM version, both great though.

As for A Docs ToGo replacement, there is A great program called SoftMaker Office that is highly recommended.

There are many browser options also including Opera, Opera Mini, Netfront, and Skyfire, just to name A few and they are better options than available for Palm at the moment.

Again, I can tell WM was never an option for you based on your post.

For other it is and it would be good for them to have straight facts to make an informed decision and my post here is for those who are looking to migrate to WM.

Both are great, depending on needs and wants, do your research and make an informed decision based on facts and not on peoples bias.

I recently stopped using my Axim when I bought A Nokia N800 Internet Tablet and am enjoying it very much.

To all, get the device that does what you need, do not be afraid of something new.

Like someone said before, it depends entirely on your needs. Windows Mobile may have a better looking interface and software bundle like wmp, office, ie 7 and windows live, but it tends to be more unstable and the OS eats away resources which could be used by an application more effectively. Also, it is somewhat more complicated then Palm in that it is a pretty much complete windows OS in a small device including all the associated folders (and more folders, which irritates me).
Palm is unable to multitask to a great degree but it keeps the device stable and fast.
The iPhone lacks the many features of a proper smartphone, but has a simple to use software suit and OS for people who don’t want to waste their time configuring the gadget.

David, I really don’t think my comments are ‘ill-informed’ or biased. If you take a minute to read the first post, you’ll notice this little paragraph that sums it up:

    Cheers!
