"I rigged my cellular to send a message to my PDA, which is online with my PC, to get it to activate the voicemail, which sends the message to the inbox of my email, which routes it to the PDA, which beams it back to the cellular. Then I realized my gadgets have a better social life than I do." !" - Tom Ostad

Pressing the power button suspends the device. The only way to power off the device is to remove the battery.

If the device turned completely off, what’s the point of an alarm? That’s the way it’s designed. Before PDAs did any media, music, etc., the entire point of them was as an alarm and to store your calendar and todo list and stuff.

O.K., thank you for your replies. I was just a bit scared that something is wrong with my device - my HTC Herald had the possibility to be switched off.
The reason why I want to switch off is to save battery during the night
