You are absolutly right. NVFS has ruined the name PalmOS. Back in days PalmOS called rock-stable. Today it’s a sluggish softreset OS.

Btw: overclocking the TX will bring it intro the same battery life level as the T3
  • Machiko Says:

It may be that the battery in your T3 is worn out and needs to be changed. The Li-Ion batteries had a finite lifetime in terms of charge-discharge cycles.

My iQue has a fairly new 1800mAH battery, that may explain the difference.

Hm, why don’t you use a T3 then?

    Touche! I do sometimes…

I stayed with my T3 during the T5 era, but WiFi and brighter display on the TX caught my eye. WarpSpeed helped me give the TX a little juice, but I haven’t felt like installing any overclocker on the Treo yet - I’m trying to be gentle.

If I didn’t like my Treo enough, I was going to revert to my T3 and a basic cellphone instead of TX, but the slow 755p is "good enough". I just wish it had the ba11z my T3 has.

Given the option I’d lose NVFS. If I didn’t backup it would be a different story, but I backup the whole device at 5:00am every day and backup PIM apps plus 2 others I use heavily every 3 hours and whenever I initiate a hotsync. There a plenty of manual backups during time of extensive change also. I’d much prefer the low latency and overall speed of my TT3 on my TX and Treo 755p.

That’s surprising as my iQue is the same vintage as your T3. Palm OS 5.2.1. Hard resets are very rare for me and I can easly restore with BackupMan, which updates the backup to my card every 8 hours.

The one issue I have with my iQue is that some resident programs such as TealMagnify and the resident part of my SlovoEd dictionary sometimes need to be reactivated.

When I swap programs with my iQue the response is instantenous, with my Treo 755p there is a variable delay, sometimes several seconds. Also running apps from the card is much faster with the old iQue.

As far as soft resets, they are not only much more frequent on my Treo but much slower. It takes literally a few minutes for my 755p to reboot from a soft reset.

I’m not sure if this related, but I notice the iPhone does not have a user-changeable battery.

I’ve had many hard resets with my T3, but I never lost any significant amount of data. A good card backup program, religiously used, lets you have a complete restore in about a minute. I agree that the NVFS, while a good idea in theory, was poorly implemented and doesn’t work as it should.

Well, I’m glad I have NVFS. I had it a few trimes that my T3 was not only without power but worse without any data anymore. Something which never happens with a NVFS device.

Interesting question, how can you check the number of charge-recharge cycles on a battery, and when is the point that you need to replace the battery? I have a Sony TJ37 that may need a new battery.

  • Jenis Says:

It was pretty obvious in my iQue and my iPod when the battery was no longer holding as much charge and did not last very long between charges.

On another point, I think the NVFS OS is useless for any third party real time processing, as those who tried to pair their Treo and TX with Garmin GPS receivers via bluetooth found out. The devices would reset in the midst of navigation, which is not surprising as the thing needs to clear it’s cache while the GPS cannot wait, while the same GPS receivers work fine with Windows Mobile devices.
