"I rigged my cellular to send a message to my PDA, which is online with my PC, to get it to activate the voicemail, which sends the message to the inbox of my email, which routes it to the PDA, which beams it back to the cellular. Then I realized my gadgets have a better social life than I do." !" - Tom Ostad

Thanks for the helpful guide Pupator. I’d tried previously to modify one of my songs in WavePad (so that I could fade in and out of the clip), but that just mangled my clip into something only half playable. This worked for me (minus any fancy fading, but that’s ok).

Pupator !!!
I could hug you!!
This is the first cool thing I’ve been able to do to my iPhone since I bought it!! The "geniuses" at the Apple Store told me I could only make ringtones from certain songs purchased from iTunes. Now I can make custom ringtones from the about 1000 CD’s I own, including the Beatles!!
I tried your instructions on Van Halen’s "You Really Got Me" and it worked perfectly!!! YEEHAAAHHH! Thanks for giving me some small hope that maybe one day my iPhone will have a fraction of the usefulness as my T|X.

Hi Pupator !
Does this routine still work with iTunes 7.7.1? With v7.7.1, I can do all the steps you listed, but when I try to drop the ".m4r" file from the music on the ringtone icon, it won’t "drop" and won’t appear in the ringtone window. Did Apple disable this capability in the newest version?
Thanks!

Joe,
I haven’t done it in a while, but with the problem you’re experiencing it sure sounds like they’ve disabled it. Makes sense if they want to charge $1 per ringtone. Wish I had better news for ya!
